ANN NICOLL

Ann Nicoll (June 9, 1911 to June 28, 2013) was born Ann Donna Martin in Gwinn "" a small mining town in Michigan's upper peninsula. Her father, William, was a mine company electrician from a large English family, and her mother, Marie Louise, was from an equally large French Canadian family. When her mother died when Ann was 9 years old, Ann inherited the household care of her father and three brothers. She grew up an independent girl who loved swimming, ice skating and skiing.

Ann's interest in music and singing took her to Northern State Teachers College as a music major. The financial challenges of the Depression changed her plans, and she found employment as the dining room manager of a major hotel and resort.

She was later accepted into the nursing program at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, where she worked in the O.R. and Surgery Department after graduation.

It was in the hospital that she met and a few years later married her husband George, and they soon moved to Dayton, Ohio. Ann and George had three children, Bill, Nancy, and George Jr. ("Andy"). In addition to raising three children, Ann was very active in the Presbyterian Church Choir and other music and art interests as well as serving as a Girl Scout leader. The Nicoll family also spent many wonderful summers in Michigan, Chicago, and traveling around the country on family camping trips.

Ann and George retired to Green Valley in the 1970s, and Ann stayed busy with her interests in art and music. She was a founding member of the Art 13 artists group and of the Valley Presbyterian Church choir. Ann and George moved to a garden home at La Posada in 1994, and to their Assisted Living apartment in 2004. Since George passed away four years ago, Ann stayed busy with family and friends, her fitness routine, and other activities. Ann was appreciative of the attentive care of La Posada staff, and enjoyed being a La Posada resident.

Ann is survived by daughter Nancy Nicoll Karsh, Green Valley, AZ; son Bill Nicoll (Elaine), Pueblo, CO; and grandsons Todd Nicoll (Pam), Denver, CO and Chris Nicoll (Brenda), Pueblo, CO. Ann also has three great-grandchildren, Rose, Emma and Ryan. Ann was pre-deceased by her son George Nicoll Jr., and her husband George Nicoll Sr.

The family suggests remembrances/honorariums be sent to The Community Performance and Arts Center (CPAC), P.O. Box 1301, Green Valley, AZ 85622-9924. CPAC is a not-for-profit 501c3 Arizona corporation.
