John Riley, born in 1936, grew up in San Clemente, Calif., where he met and married high school sweetheart, Joy. The couple had been happily married 57 years and have four children: Craig, of Dallas, TX, a retired air traffic controller; Wayne, a retired CPA of Sacramento, CA; Glenn (spouse Karen), a general contractor of Folsom, CA; and Janet, an interpreter for the death, of Albuquerque, NM. They have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Upon graduating from Loyola University in Los Angeles, John entered the Air Force as a Medical Service Corps officer and spent his 22-year career in various health care administrative positions. He served in Korea, Vietnam and at the Surgeon General's office in Washington, D.C. (where he also earned a master's degree from George Washington University). He worked in hospitals, staff positions and with the worldwide aeromedical evacuation system. While on active duty, John was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and several other decorations.
Upon retiring from active duty in 1981, John became a senior manager at Sutter Health, a regional not-for-profit health care system based in Sacramento, CA. During the next 14 years he was CEO of three different Sutter hospitals, including its brand-new 300-bed medical center in downtown Sacramento. John later became Sutter's senior vice president for Quality and Human Resources before once again retiring in 1994.
John and Joy became full-time Green Valley residents that same year. They joined Desert Hills Golf Club, where he was elected to the board of directors for four years and served one year as club president.
John was appointed to La Posada's Board of Trustees in 1999. He initially served on the board for six years, four as board chairman. It was during this tenure that La Posada became the only accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community in Arizona. After a short hiatus, he was asked to rejoin the La Posada board in 2007 and served until 2012.
John and Joy moved to La Posada in 2012, and have enjoyed every moment of it. Bequests may be made to the La Posada foundation or to
