Donald Vance Shelton (Don) passed peacefully at home with family and friends at his side. Don was born on 12/1/1941 to parents C. Vance and Dorothy K. Shelton in Long Beach, CA. His twin brother, Ronald, lived only one day. Don's parents and older brother, Gary, will welcome him into their arms again.
Don was loved by many lifelong friends and family. He will be remembered for his talkative personality, welcoming smile, and warm heart. Don is survived by his wife, Carol, and loving children, Judi Leonard, Mark Whitney, and Christine Rene Shelton, and grandchildren April Leonard, Andrew Leonard, Nathan Shelton, Alexander Whitney, and Jonathan Whitney.
Don grew up in Long Beach, CA and entered the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts and the American Legion Post 66. He had a passion for cars and learned as a young boy how to "fix them, rebuild them, lower them, customize them and race them."
He was certified as an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master mechanic and worked at VW dealerships in Arizona and California. He owned "Don's Automotive" in Long Beach, specializing in personalized service for VW needs. When being a mechanic became too physically difficult, he went to work at Cook Volkswagen in Encinitas, CA. He was a member of the Volkswagen Sales Guild, and believed in being a friend to each customer and in establishing a warm relationship with them.
No funeral is planned, but a private celebration of his life will be held.
Please consider gifts of love in Don's memory to Casa Community Adult Day Services, 780 S. Park Centre Avenue, Green Valley, AZ 85614, (520) 625-2273, http://www.casagv.org/.
