Dorothy Avenell Schotte, 89 years, died of natural causes on Feb. 11, 2013, in Broomfield, CO.
The youngest of four children, Dorothy was born on Nov. 21, 1923, at Raton, NM, where her father operated a small grocery store. Her mother died at an early age due to diabetes and Dorothy was largely raised by an older sister and her husband, Juanita and George Lauterbach.
Dorothy graduated from Santa Barbara High School, Santa Barbara, CA. During WWII, she contributed to the war effort by working as a teletype operator at Benicia Arsenal, Benicia, CA. In 1943, she met and married William Austin Sutton in Vallejo, CA. Mr. Sutton was a sergeant in the U.S. Army at the time. After the war, the couple settled in Calistoga, CA and later Napa, CA, where Mr. Sutton worked for PG&E and Dorothy worked as a medical assistant to Dr. E. Paul White, Jr., an internist in Napa, CA. She was a member of St John's Lutheran Church. Her marriage ended in divorce. Later, she married H.B. (Pete) Schotte and they lived in Yountville, CA, until his death.
In her retirement, Dorothy relocated to Green Valley, AZ, where she made many wonderful friends and was close with her sister, Ann Rathner, and niece, Shirley Sproul, both of whom lived nearby.
In 2010, Dorothy moved to Colorado. She is survived by her daughter, Jamie Sutton Zimmerman of Louisville, CO; and her son, Robert Sutton of Austin, TX. Additionally, she has four grand children; two great-grand children; and two on the way.
