Obituary Condolences

Sherrod L. (Rod) Herndon, a resident of La Posada Retirement Community since 2005, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 at the age of 92. Born in Abbeville, AL on June 24, 1921, Rod lived most of his young life in Lake Wales, FL, where he graduated from high school in 1939. After graduation, he moved to Atlanta for school and worked in a men's clothing store where he learned the secrets of being well dressed, a practice he continued throughout his life.

His education was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. He served four years in the Army Air Corps, the predecessor to the U.S. Air Force, from 1942-1946. Upon discharge, he studied at the University of Georgia in Atlanta.

For 41 years. Rod worked in the refined petroleum products pipeline industry and retired from the Los Angeles office of the Southern Pacific Pipe Line Company in 1986. He married the former Millie Middleton in 1972. Following retirement, he and his wife Millie moved to Green Valley from Fullerton, CA.

Rod is survived by his daughter, Carolyn H. Wright, of Austin, TX; his son, John of Greenville, SC; two stepdaughters, Dianne White Crawford of Canyon Country, CA; and Sandee Middleton Booth of Hemet CA, and his brother, Horace Herndon of Lake Wales, FL. His dear wife Millie, to whom he was happily married for 38 wonderful years, predeceased him in 2011. His sister Gwen H. Burr of Hendersonville, NC, also predeceased him.

Rod was a member of the Green Valley Community Church since 1986 and a past member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Elks Lodge. His love of opera and other classical music began in his 20s when he attended "La Traviata," which remained his favorite opera.

A celebration of Rod's life will be held at Green Valley Community Church on Friday, Dec. 6, at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Church or another worthy organization.
