EDWARD JOHN

KAUFMAN, M.D.

Beloved Centenarian

Dr. Edward John Kaufman, resident of Green Valley, AZ, formerly of Appleton, MN, died October 12, 2012, in St. Paul, MN, while visiting family. Born March 20, 1910, Appleton, MN. Preceded in death by adored wife of 71 years, Dorothybelle, sister Constance Kaufman Wesner and niece, Margot Wesner Persen.

Attended Appleton Public Schools, Carleton College, and University of Minnesota Medical School, graduating in 1935. He met fellow classmate Dorothybelle McCree in medical school and they were married in April 1935. The couple interned in California before settling in Appleton where Ed started practicing medicine. He continued his practice until retiring in 1976 when he started a second career as president of Minnesota Farms Co. He would say a second career is one of the secrets to a long life.

Ed and Dorothybelle started spending time in Green Valley in 1989, moving here full time in 1999. Ed loved GV and the available activities for which he had never before had time. He had many outside interests including hunting; fishing; volunteering at an elementary school teaching ham radio; computers; Skyping with grand- and great-grandchildren; gadgets; reading, usually from a Kindle or iPad; and baking bread. Travels included an around-the-world trip with his dad; many trips with his wife and children; a 6-week hunting trip to Canada on horseback in British Columbia; and at age 96, salmon fishing in Alaska with son and grandchildren where he showed them how to fish by catching a 78-pound king salmon.

Strong proponents of education, Dr. Ed and Dorothybelle established scholarships at the University of Minn., Morris, in honor of their parents. These funds have provided scholarships for more than 100 students.

Survived by children Juliana Kaufman Rupert, Roseville, MN and Green Valley, Dr. Edward Andrew Kaufman (Martha) of Phoenixville PA, and Adele Kaufman of Roseville, MN; grandchildren Peter James Rupert (Sara), Mark Edward Rupert (Susan), Pollyanna Rupert Nasalle (Steven), Timothy John Rupert (Kathryn), Dr. Kate Kaufman, and Elizabeth Kaufman; six great-grandchildren; nieces. nephews, cousins, friends, and loving caregivers, Delia Hicks, Maricruz Navarro, Gloria Dominguez and Mary “Gaby” Lopez.

Remarkable in so many ways, a wonderful role model, good friend, father, husband, grandpa, employer, keen mind to the end, good diagnostician, took the “family“ part of family doctor seriously, education advocate, highly regarded and loved by many whose paths crossed his during his long life.

A Celebration of Life honoring Edward and Dorothybelle Kaufman will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Appleton, MN on October 29, 2012. Memorials can be made to the University of Minnesota, Morris, Office of External Relations, 600 East 4th Street, Morris, MN 55267. Please indicate Kaufman scholarships in memo line.
