Dearest Susan, I was stunned while looking through the AJC to stumble across Mike's obituary. I had always worried about his heart since the days of his first attack when we were at SPDL together. My thoughts are centered on you and the kids now, as you try to move forward without your rock. He will be missed by many.

Mr. Sheffield was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I have ever met. I feel privileged to have known him. He represented my fiance, saw him through a very tangled mess, showed genuine concern for the well-being of our family, and always stayed so calm. I liked that. I believe God led me to Mr. Sheffield. I believe that he made miracles happen for my family. Now, my prayers are for his family. I am terribly sorry for your loss.

From an old family friend from Long Island Dr.--Mike and I use to play chess together as children--in fact he taught me how to play. Mike was a great friend as was Ken. What memories I cherish from our younger years. May you know how much he & his family meant to me as I grew up. In talking with Mike during his bid for the Court of Appeals, we had many good conversations, but the one thing that was always present in his mind was his love for his wife & children, and Lucy & Ken and his family. Mike lived with kindness and joy in his heart. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He was truly a gentleman, a gentle soul, and a fine human being. I had the pleasure of working with him in the District Attorney's Office in the 1970's, and always remember his kindnesses to everyone, no matter their circumstances or lot in life. He was always willing to help people in need. God has received a true angel in Heaven. May He comfort Susan, Olivia and Matthew, as well as the rest of the Sheffield family, and may they treasure the precious memories that they have of Mike. He will truly be missed by all of those who were blessed to be able to call him friend.

Mike and I spent many days together in court. He always was in a wonderful mood and did a good job for his clients. Out of the courtroom, he was fun and a pleasure to be around. I recall visiting his house after the devastating Dunwoody tornedo. In spite of the disaster that had just occured, he was his usual calm and engaging self. He will be missed by all of us who were privileged to have known him.

Mike was such a wise and gentle soul. I always enjoyed seeing his face at the courthouse. You knew he was always nice and an excellent lawyer. He will be sorely missed. My prayers go to his family. He was one of the good guys. Not because he was a defense attorney or an ex-prosecutor, but because he was a good person.

My prayers extend to Mike and his family. He was more than a first-rate attorney; he was a first-rate guy who clearly exemplified Christian values that impacted real people in practical ways.
He was a mentor to me professionally and personally, and he will be missed dearly.
It's comforting to know he's with the Lord at this point and, in the future, will be joined by many friends and family members who strive to "fight the good fight" down here.

Susan and family: Mike was a great guy and a credit to the legal profession. He also conducted himself as a true Christian witness, consistent with the verse below:
"He has shown you O man what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
to act justly and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God."

I knew Mike Sheffield when he was a student at Wake Forest. He always studied in the Library reading room, and when I would try to distract him, he would say, "Joseph, I do not have time for your foolishness." With that, he then would take off his glasses, look at me, and say, "What's on your mind?" He would take time to listen to me, and even when it was foolishness, he gave me what I needed--time, attention, and friendship. I will miss him very much.
