Laura HALEN Obituary

News Death Notice

HALEN, Laura Jane passed this life on April 17, 2013. Born October 23, 1929 in East Chicago Indiana, she grew up in Woodmar and Battle Creek, Michigan, Waukegan and Chicago, Illinois. In her junior year of high school, her family moved to Cincinnati where she attended Walnut Hills. Excelling in art, she later graduated from the University of Cincinnati and eventually joined the Holland advertising firm. During her sixty-year marriage to jazz musician Carl Halen, she long served as president of the Little Chicago Jazz Society and also was active studying dance at the Cincinnati Academy of Theatre and Dance with Mac Vestal. Perhaps her greatest fulfillment came from a never-ending love of her husband, and life on the idyllic Goos Road farm outside of Hamilton, where they found balance between erudite, spirited conversation with friends and family, wonderful cooking and going to concerts. Many wonderful memories were shared when local families began their holiday season with a visit to the Halen Christmas Tree Farm. They also spent many evenings enjoying a classic film at home on the big screen. Laura is survived by her sister Nancy Lee Skaife, and five nieces and three nephews. A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 26.
