News Death Notice

BUCKLES, Jr., Ernest J. age 95, of Middletown, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at home. He was born August 1917 at Mound City, Kansas. "E.J." was a decorated veteran who served as a Captain during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp, piloting aircraft in the European/North African theatre, and flying "The Hump" in the China/Burma/India theatre. He was a POW in North Africa, and survived a serious bomber crash. He then returned to Kansas University and finished a degree in Civil Engineering. He was employed over 30 years with Armco International, and counted the installation of the Dual Coating Plant in Argentina among his proudest accomplishments. He was honored by several countries for his work. A man of many talents, E.J. was a jazz musician, inventor, and entrepreneur. He loved flying, was a lifelong pilot and a member of the Middletown Aviation Club and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He is survived by Vera (Fugate) Buckles, his wife of 62 years; one son, Jeff (Katy) of Houston, Texas; 2 daughters, Jennifer (Michael) Niehaus of Lebanon, Ohio and Leslie (Robert) James of Lexington, Kentucky, and grandchildren John P, Thomas, Joseph, Elizabeth, Meghan, Robert, and John H. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family with military honors inurnment immediately following at Woodside Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
