News Death Notice
VALENTINE, Heath E. 76, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 following surgery in Tampa, Florida. He was born August 23, 1936 in Akron, Ohio to Jewel Heath Valentine and Eugene Jacob Valentine. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 48 years, Mary Prentice Valentine. Heath led a full life; after a childhood of showing horses and racing sailboats, he graduated from Duke University with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering (1958). It was there that he met his sweetheart, Mary Frances Prentice. Upon graduation from Duke, he entered the Air Force as a second lieutenant and was stationed in Paris, France as a meteorologist. On February 20, 1960 in Akron, Ohio, he and Mary were married and they returned to France to complete his tour of duty. Heath and Mary returned to the states in 1961 to have Heath start his career as an engineer with Reynolds Aluminum in Richmond, Virginia. The birth of their first child, Crista, occurred in August. Heath worked for Reynolds for several years and then joined Magnode Corporation in Trenton, Ohio in 1968. Heath and Mary were newly living in Middletown, Ohio when they had their second daughter, Heather, that December. Heath's career in the aluminum highway products industry grew to the point that in 1988, he started his own engineering design and manufacturing company, Valentine and Company, in which he has been awarded many patents and is involved in international government projects and several highway, bridge, and railing projects throughout the country. With retirement in mind, Heath and Mary decided to build a winter home in Vero Beach, Florida. Tragically, Mary died soon after the house was completed. With the help of family, friends, and the church, Heath was able to start a new life in Florida that was filled with fun and activity, and even had his company become more successful! Heath is survived by daughters Crista (John) Clancy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Heather (Ken) Mitten of Memphis, Tennessee. His grandsons are Scott, Matt, and Jack Clancy, and Eric Mitten. He is also survived by his sister Paula (Robert) Street, of San Diego, California, and nieces and nephews John (Melissa) Street of San Diego, Sara Street of Plano, Texas, Christopher Street of New York City, and Polly (Joel) Reid of Los Angeles. Heath also leaves behind his dear friend in Vero Beach, Barbara Butts, her son Daniel, and his trusted business confidant and office manager of several years, Gloria Poff. Funeral services will be held Friday June 7, 2013 at 10:30 am at Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers our family requests contributions be made to Atrium Medical Center Foundation, 1 Medical Center Dr., Middletown, Ohio 45005. Contributions received will be placed in the Mary Prentice Valentine Caregivers Appreciation endowment.
