News Death Notice

THOMAS, Joseph Marshall 82 passed away Wed., Sept. 18, 2013. Born Dec. 27, 1930 in Ashland, Ohio to Vellman Marshall Thomas and Joseph Swartz Thomas. He graduated Cornell University with a bachelor in Civil Engineering and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduation Joe served his country in the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After an initial position with US Steel in Pittsburgh, he moved to Middletown as a project manager with Armco Steel. Joe was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Trustee. He was President of Middletown Tennis Club and served on the Board of the Middletown Fine Arts. As a member of Brown's Run Country Club, Joe was elected to the Board and headed up many construction projects for the Club. When a young man, Joe had a keen interest in Scouting achieving Eagle Scout rank. He was a member of the Mound Builders Area Boy Scouts and was advisor to Explorers Post One for over 30 years. Joe was also involved in many fund drives for the United Way, YMCA, Boy Scouts and the Cancer Society. His passion was the outdoors enjoying camping, hiking, tennis, skiing, golf and biking. Joe is survived by his wife, Julie Smith Thomas and their eight children and their families: Scott Thomas (Cathy), Jodi Thomas, Julie Handcock (Matt), Martin Wenzel (Karen), Shelly Harrison (Tom), Laurie Ives (George), Amy Wenzel (Lonnie Fancher), 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Memorial service will be held 4:00 PM, Tuesday, Oct., 1, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, 2910 Central Ave., Middletown, Ohio with Reverend David Jackson officiating. Graveside service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday at Woodside Cemetery, with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Road, Ithaca, New York, 14850 or Middletown Bulls Run Arboretum.
