News Death Notice

GIFFORD, Robert E. Age 88, of Hamilton, died Monday, January 27, 2014. He was born November 25, 1925, the only child of Merwin T. and Mary (Groh) Gifford. He was a 1943 graduate of Fredericktown High School, Knox County, OH. Bob began college at Miami University on a football scholarship. His college education was interrupted when he enlisted to serve in WWII. Bob joined the United States Air Force in November of 1943 serving his tour of duty as a Staff Sergeant in the South Pacific. He flew 28 missions with the 13th Air Force, 42nd Bomb Group as a tail gunner in a B25 bomber. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Miami University in 1949 where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He received his law degree from Salmon B. Chase Law School. Bob married Patricia Schlosser on July 12, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hamilton. Bob worked briefly for the Butler County Health Association and the Butler County Health Department. He spent the majority of his working years with Pease Company, first in the Homes Division and later ended his career with Pease Industries, Inc., Everstrait. He was an officer on the company Board of Directors and wore many managerial hats during his 36 years with Pease retiring as Vice President of Distribution. Bob served on the Butler County Republican Central Committee representing Hanover Township. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as President of the church council. He played for the Legal Eagles softball team and was an avid handball player in his younger years. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, horseshoes, poker night and golf. He was an animal lover kindly caring for many family pets and horses. He was tirelessly patient with his children and grandchildren showering them with wisdom and love. He never met a stranger and was always quick with a smile. He was a good man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patty; daughters Amy Butterfield (Dallas), Oxford and Carrie Jo Robicheaux (Brad), Rosehill, TX; 5 grandchildren; Sarah Butterfield, Kait Butterfield, Jennifer Robicheaux Ward (Bill), Grant Robicheaux and Blair Robicheaux; 1 great grandchild Wilder Ward. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to; Zion Lutheran Church, 212 Front St., Hamilton, OH 45011; The Mary C. Spoerl Education Fund in care of Colonial Foundation, 520 Eaton Ave., Hamilton, OH 45013 or Animal Friends Humane Society, 1820 Princeton Rd., Hamilton, OH 45011.
