ERICKSON, Helen Minnie Helen Erickson, former member of the English Department of Union County High School, Liberty Indiana, died Sunday, November 17, at her home in Oxford. She was a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio with degrees of Bachelor of Science (1968) and Master of Arts, Education (1972). Mrs. Erickson was active in Oxford's educational and community affairs, and was a docent at the Miami University Art Museum. She founding member of Faith Lutheran Church, then under the leadership of the Rev. James Baldwin. She was a founding member of the Oxford Museum Association. Her interest in local history included the restoration of Oxford's octagon house, built in 1862. This was a three-story, red brick home capped by an observation tower, said to be a lookout for "Morgan's Raiders" during the Civil War. The restoration became her family's residence on Morning Sun Road for many years. Mrs. Erickson taught English literature and composition at the junior and senior levels. Students were encouraged to make the most of their abilities. In later years, many students expressed appreciation for her lively and rigorous classes. Once retired, Mrs. Erickson volunteered several years of tutoring to Chinese students attending Miami University. Mrs. Erickson had a life-long interest in national political affairs and issues of women's equality. She was an avid reader, and belonged to several book clubs over many years. She was widely regarded for her intellect, good nature, wit and humor. Mrs. Erickson was born into an Irish and Norwegian family in Flandreau, South Dakota in 1914. Her great aunt was the first woman elected to the Norwegian Parliament. She was married to Byron A. Erickson, Director of Housing, Dining and Guest Services at Miami University for twenty-five years. He was nephew of Oxford's Eric E. Erickson, Professor of Mathematics at Miami University from 1925 to 1964. Mrs. Erickson is survived by her three sons; Byron Craig of Oxford, Mark Edward of Oakland, California, Eric Andrew of Garrison, New York; and granddaughter Emily Rose Erickson of Oakland, who is a senior at the University of California, Davis, California. Members of the immediate family are Kerstin Erickson of Oxford, Janice Fletcher of Oakland, and Marilyn Young of Garrison. Private family services were held at the Oxford Cemetery on November 23.
