News Death Notice
FORTNEY, Howard Warren 94, passed away at home November 1, 2013. He was born November 26, 1918 at home in Wilsonburg, WV., the son of Archie B. Fortney and Lydia Pearl Fortney. He graduated from Lumberport High School 1937. He was sworn into the US Navy on March 1, 1938. He was assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Chicago, and stationed at Pearl Harbor. During WWII the Chicago took part in battles at Coral Sea and the invasion of Guadalcanal, during which the Chicago was damaged and later sank. Howard was assigned to the destroyer escort USS Raymond. In September 1943 he achieved his final rank of Chief Petty Officer, Chief Electrician Mate. The USS Raymond took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, earning the Presidential Unit Citation for its part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Howard received the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal; American Area Campaign Medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon; World War II Victory Medal; American Defense Medal; Good Conduct Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal. Howard married Flora Enevoldsen in 1956 while finishing his Navy career as a recruiter in Athens and Meigs Counties, Ohio. Howard retired from the Navy November 30, 1957. Howard worked for Ohio University in Audiovisual services for 10 years. He received his Associate degree from Hocking Technical College in Electrical Engineering in 1971 at age 52. He worked for American Electric Power until retirement in 1980. In retirement Howard and Flo enjoyed traveling abroad, visiting their children and grandchildren and friends. His abiding interests included the outdoors, gardening, hiking, and conservation. He loved reading about history, and stayed current with world affairs until the end of his life. He is survived by his wife Flora Fortney, his three siblings Mary Ruth McGeoghegan of Toledo, WA; Clifford Fortney of Denver, CO; Patrick Fortney of Henderson, NV; his children Rebecca (Matthew) Jonas of Santa Barbara, CA.; Susan Fortney-Harlan (John) of Oxford, OH.; David (Cheryl) Fortney of Sidney, OH; and his 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Howard was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church where funeral services were held Thursday, November 7. Visitation was at Ogle & Young Funeral Home, November 6. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army in memory of Howard W. Fortney.
