News Death Notice

FAIRBANKS, Elizabeth died peacefully at Woodlands Retirement Home in Middletown, Ohio on April 16, 2014, at the age of 89. Betty was born on February 15, 1925, in Catonsville, Maryland to Albert and Elizabeth (Renehan) Sehlstedt Sr. and was the third of four children. She was a 1943 graduate of Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville and studied at Notre Dame College of Maryland. On March 23, 1946, Betty was united in Holy Matrimony to Joseph P. Fairbanks III, long time Hamilton physician who preceded her in death in 2008. Betty and Joe moved to Ohio in 1950, and became active parishioners at St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church and continued to raise a large family in Hamilton. Betty and her husband enjoyed sports together such as tennis, skiing, and bridge. She was a faithful friend to many in Hamilton and became involved with many local organizations such as Hamilton Civic Theater, the Civelles, St. Peter's CRHP, The League of Women Voters, and she also served as scout leader and enjoyed many years at New London Hills Club where her family was founding members. Betty is survived by her fourteen loving children who now live in many parts of the country: Marty Morrow (Oakland, California), Polly (Hamilton, Ohio), Jon (Richmond, Virginia), Dan (Oxford, Ohio), Phyllis (Marin County, California), Bill (Chapel Hill, North Carolina), Patrick (Cincinnati, Ohio), Jim (Middletown, Ohio), Steve (Tipp City, Ohio), Jane Brossart (Minneapolis, Minnesota), George (San Francisco, California), Tom (Loveland, Ohio), Ed (Seattle, Washington), and Rob (Hamilton, Ohio); twenty-two grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; eleven nieces and nephews; two sisters, Nancy Feild of Baltimore, Maryland and Maryknoll Sr. Margaret Sehlstedt, M.M. of Ossining, New York; several in-laws; and friends. Besides her husband, Dr. Joseph P. Fairbanks III, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Albert Sehlstedt Jr. Friends may call from 5-7:00PM Tuesday in the Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00AM Wednesday, in St. Peter in Chains Church, with Rev. Patrick Fairbanks S.J. officiating, followed by burial in St. Stephen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Butler County DD, Online register book is available at
