Joyce Joan ELMER-KOSOBUD Obituary

News Death Notice

ELMER-KOSOBUD, Joyce Joan Passed into God's hands during the early morning hours of June 19, 2014, just a few days shy of her 90th birthday. A longtime resident of Hamilton, Joyce was born to Marcus Elmer and Lucille (Olstadt) Elmer, the first of three daughters, in Madison, Wisconsin on June 23, 1924. Joyce lived in several communities in south-central Wisconsin before returning to the capital, Madison, where she attended East High School. There, she met her future husband, Francis Kosobud. Joyce attended the University of Wisconsin and attained a degree in Applied Arts. While at the University, she served as Chairman of the Student Union Gallery Committee for several years and went on to become the Director of the University of Wisconsin Student Union Workshop, overseeing its operations. Joyce and Francis were married on August 17, 1946. The couple's first child, Mark, was born several years later, and upon completion of Francis' schooling, they moved to Houston, Texas where their second child, Ann, was born. The couple returned to Madison where Joyce became an administrative assistant to the Madison General Hospital staff; eventually settling with her family in Hamilton, Ohio. After receiving an advance degree and teaching certification from Miami University, Joyce taught art in both the Hamilton City School system and the Fairfield City School system, also adding general classroom and math instructor duties while at Fairfield. Joyce was active with the League of Women Voters for many years, authoring a booklet entitled Your City Government which was published by the League. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, a lifetime member of the Wisconsin Union of the University of Wisconsin, and a Charter member of the Edvard Grieg Lodge of the Sons of Norway. With her husband, Joyce had great enthusiasm for travel and maintained a lifelong love of the arts. Joyce is survived by her sisters, Betty (John) Samsela and Doris (William) McDougal; her spouse of nearly 68 years, Francis; her children Mark (Diane) and Ann (Eric) Benn. Celebrated as their Bestemor, she will be fondly remembered by her five grandchildren Sky (Beth), Erik (Beth), David (Amanda) Kosobud; Christina (Aaron) Williams, Siri Benn; and seven great-grandchildren Grant, Eli, Nolan, Henry, Kieran, Greyson Kosobud and Peter Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcus and Lucille, and a great-grandchild, Kelsey Kosobud. Joyce will be sadly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all members of the Berkeley Square staff for all the kindness and care shown to our parents during this difficult time. A Gathering for Family and Friends will be held at Webb Noonan Kidd Funeral Home, 240 Ross Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 6:30pm until 8:00pm. A Memorial Mass will take place at St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church, 382 Liberty Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 10:30am. Interment to immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Joyce's name to the wonderful Hospice of Cincinnati, Inc., P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, Ohio 45263 or at www.HospiceofCincinnati.org.
