News Death Notice

MCDONOUGH, James Basil 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening August 28, 2014 after an extended illness. He was the youngest of 10 children of John Bernard and Frances C. McDonough. Jim was born and reared on the McDonough family farm in Oxford Township. Jim was a 1952 graduate of McGuffey High School and was co-captain of his high school football team. Jim graduate from Ohio State University in 1956 with a major in Agriculture and Animal Science. He served during the Korean War as a medic in the U.S. Army. Jim met his wife Agnes Herzog while working at Seaboard Finance Company in Hamilton, Ohio. They were married in 1965, and recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. Jim and Agnes moved to the Oxford area in 1969, purchasing their own farm in 1976. Jim retired from First Financial Bank as Vice President of Consumer Credit in 2000 after 30 years of service. While there he started their first Master Charge credit department, taught installment credit courses for the American Institute of Banking and was selected to serve as chairman of the Ohio Bankers Credit Division. McDonough was very active in his community, serving more than 24 years as Oxford Township Trustee. He was a life member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oxford. He served as treasurer of the Talawanda Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, served on St. Mary Catholic Church Parrish Council and on the Cemetery Board. His love of sports encouraged him to volunteer, 30 years, working with the "chain gang" assisting at all the Talawanda H.S. home football games. He was a board member of Landmark Co-op for several years. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Alice M. and Albert Stephenson; four brothers, John B. Jr., Edgar J. and Edwin P. (twins) and Paul Patrick and wife Martha McDonough; brothers-in-law Morris Nelson and Leo Bever; and several nephews and nieces. He leaves his beloved wife Agnes, two sisters, Martha Nelson of St. Joseph, MI and Frances C. Bever of Somerset, OH; two brothers Kenneth Mark (Margaret) of Coshocton, OH and Thomas J. (Anna Mary) of Ashland, OH. He enjoyed 47 nieces and nephews who often visited throughout the years. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 1st at St. Mary Catholic Church in Oxford, beginning at 11:00 A.M. with a celebration Mass at 1:00 P.M. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
