I am saddened to only have learned of Dr. Waters' passing today.
I met him at the Safe Patient Handling and Movement Conference in 2012, and he was just so pleasant and kind to answering my questions. As an Educator (Kin and OT background), I often reference his research and share with my students how his contributions to injury prevention are endless (and also share how neat it was to have meet him for 5 minutes)!
He will certainly be missed.
My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Tom was truly a gift to us all. I met him professionally, through shared work interests, but Tom quickly indicated, by his warmth and helpfulness, that he would be a good friend as well. We got to meet each other's families, and arranged to work together on a couple of conferences as much to get a chance (an excuse) to visit as for the professional side of things.

I was his grandson and he was like the biggest 10 year old ever he would do every thing with me from playing. Video games to taking branches from trees and putting them In a forest where they belong even though they were all ready there

Tom's work has served to help protect countless working people from lifting related injuries. A worn copy of his "Applications Manual for the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation" has for years maintained a spot on my shelf, and from where it has been pulled down to reference numerous times. Reading now about Tom the man, brings joy and sadness to me, as my image of Tom is enriched and as I recognize the great loss so many likely feel. I expect I will think of him again when I next get on my bicycle. I send to Tom's Tom's many surviving family blessings of healing.

My heart and thoughts go out to Dr. Waters and his family and friends. Sadly, I learned of his death after his funeral. I share my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and those of us in his profession. I knew and worked with Dr. Waters on ergonomics related projects professionally and want to express that I am so privileged to have known and worked with him. He was brilliant, encouraging, and humble. My heart aches for his family and our loss to our profession, yet I rejoice in knowing of his everlasting. Rest In Peace Tom, thank you for your service!!

Tom was a friend and colleague and I value the time spent with him and I am saddened that it was cut short. However, we will have what he has left behind and know that he did make a differene through his presence. My sincere condolences to his family.

Tom was recognized leader in conducting the necessary research to produce the evidence based science in the fight to protect workers from the hazards they faced on the job. He did much especially to protect healthcare workers from the epidemic of neck, back and shoulder injuries from senseless manual patient handling by demonstrating that they are largely preventable by instituting safe patient handling programs. However what I will most remember was his kind unassuming and giving nature. He will be sorely missed by the countless workers who now benefit from his commitment to their protection. Bill Borwegen

Tom will be sorely missed from his professional community. He has contributed so much to the lives and safety of care givers around the world. It was an honor to meet him, and although he is in a better place now, it doesn't make it any easier for the ones he left behind! God be with you at this time
