Richard MORT Obituary

News Death Notice

MORT, Richard Eugene 78, of Middletown, died at home on April 14, 2016. Born May 27, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, he lived in Vandalia, then West Manchester, Ohio with his parents Bernard & Bonnie Mort, who preceded him in death, as did his brother, Charles. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann; daughter, Tracy (Tom) Hopkins; son, Tony (Tonya) Mort; grandchildren, Dan, Sam & Karen Hopkins and Camryn & Lindsey Mort; sister, Janice (Horace) Weeks; and several nieces & nephews. Dick graduated from Monroe High School in Preble County (now National Trails), served a tour in Korea with the US Army, then earned bachelor and master degrees from the University of Dayton. His work history ranged from baling hay on the farms of Preble County to working as an assembler at Delco Moraine, digging graves for Monroe Township, as a billing clerk at Consolidated Freightways, an internal auditor for National Cash Register, then Accountant and Plant Controller at Square D in Middletown. He enjoyed public service projects: Dayton Jaycees treasurer (and winner of the Bull Slinger Award as well as Key Man Award), Little League Baseball coach, Junior Achievement advisor, treasurer and/or cash manager for All American Weekend, US National Hot Air Balloon Championships, Art Central Foundation, Ohio Challenge Hot Air Balloon Festival and Light Up Middletown. He particularly enjoyed being a part of the Light Up Middletown Grandpa Gang. A 40-year supporter of all things Middie, he seldom missed a basketball or football game. Memorial service will be held Monday, April 18, 2016 at 7:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown with Reverend Lamar Ferrell officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Ashes will be scattered at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Art Central Foundation, 1504 N. Breiel Blvd, Middletown, Ohio 45042. Please sign the guestbook online at WilsonSchrammSpaulding.com

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Mort's death. I remember seeing him many times in my younger days and thinking that he was such a nice "down to earth" guy. He will be missed. Cris

My deepest sympathy goes out to Ann and all his family. He was every where you looked helping Skeeter Payne at the high school and through out Middletown , he was everywhere in the city he loved. Doing what he loved volunteering. You name it he was probably there. I never heard him say a unkind thing about anyone. He was just one great guy, husband and father. A true MIDDIE THROUGH AND THROUGH. May he rest in peace. God Bless

Ann, There are no words that can fill the emptiness in your heart; but perhaps it will help to know others care. May God comfort you and your family at this time.

Ann it's been a long time since I have had contact with you and Dick but I want you to know I have very fond memories of working with Dick at Barkelew and Square D. His obit says it all. He was well recognized for his career and civic endeavors. My best to you and your family in this most difficult time. Charley Denny
