John Mendes Obituary

John Joseph Mendes, 86, of Caruthers, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, after a five-year battle with cancer.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary S. Mendes, and his brothers, Frank and Louie Mendes. He was born in Stratford on Aug. 18, 1924. He was a former dairyman and retired from Nutrius Feed Company in Kingsburg in 1986.

John was a member of the Portuguese fraternal societies: ISMM, IDES and now PFSA.

He is survived by his widow, Maria Amelia Mendes of Caruthers; his brother, Anthony and wife Gloria of Kingsburg; his sisters, Ali Vermeulen of Pismo Beach and Louise Stout and husband Leland of Hanford; his brother-in-law, Joe Vieira and wife Fatima of Atwater; sisters-in-law, Ginger Mendes of Kingsburg and Betty Mendes of Taft; many nieces and nephews and other beloved family members.

John's services will take place at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Kingsburg. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 9. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m., with burial at the Kingsburg District Cemetery. Father Greg Beaumont will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests Mass intentions at the Catholic Churches in Riverdale, Lemoore, Laton or Kingsburg or donations to Hinds Hospice, 1616 W. Shaw, Suite B-6, Fresno, CA 93711.
