Marie was born in Hanford to the late Manuel and Annie Miguel, July 19, 1921. Marie had a wonderful childhood growing up on her parent's dairy and fruit ranch where she attended Excelsior Grammar School and graduated from Hanford High School. Marie married her sweetheart the late Joseph Vierra Valine May 24, 1942. They purchased their first new car and took it on their honeymoon. It now belongs to their only child.
Marie worked as a floor lady at Williams Brother's Asparagus in Cotton Center and Tule River Co-Op in Woodville where she was a weigh master before working as rancher's wife in Woodville beside Joseph.
Marie was a lively lady whose sharp wit and rapid fire come backs made conversations with her a challenge and a joy. She thoroughly enjoyed her Friday morning rituals with her daughter at the hair dressers where she kept everyone in stitches and on their toes.
Marie was proud of her Portuguese heritage and active in many clubs and associations. She was a past Supreme Director of the UPPEC and a member of LUSO, S.P.R.S.I, S.E.S, U.P.E.C, I.S.M.M, I.D.E.S and St. Anthony. Marie was also a member of St. Anne's Auxiliary and Porterville Women's Club. She was an avid bowler, bowling city and state tournaments in her younger years. She was also an extremely active 4-H & FFA Mom and a band parent. Marie was a passionate volunteer at Porterville Fair beginning in the mid 70's. Her travels included a trip to the Azores Islands; she loved a good cruise and saw many of the states. She loved spending time at her home in Pismo Beach where she became a professional porch sitter and neighborhood welcome wagon of one. Her family carries on that tradition.
Marie is survived by her only child, Carolyn Ann Valine McCuen born September, 17, 1958, her loving son-in-law Gene McCuen, and the true light of her life, grandson, Scott Joseph McCuen, 17. The four lived together in the McCuen home in Porterville. She is also survived by grandchildren Patrick and Chris, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and is preceded in death by one great-grandchild. Marie is also survived by surrogate daughter Kay Peterson-Wallen.
