Vernon Jack ("VJ") Hays passed away on November 6, 2012 in Hanford, California at the age of 81. He was born on July 18, 1931 in the country outside of Loraine, Texas to Priestley Parker Hays of Decatur, Tennessee and Winnie Mae Crownover of Sulphur, Oklahoma. VJ graduated from the 8th grade at Loraine Unified, then pursued a long and successful career as a cotton gin manager.

On New Year's Eve in 1949 at the age of 18, VJ married the love of his life, Stella Mae Fires, and for 62 years they shared a joyous life together. VJ is survived by his wife and five children: Nellie Parks, Trena Gunter, Merlin Hays, Leta Burriss, and Randy Hays; his sister Doris McGuire, his grandchildren: Kristina Williams, Casey Alilin, Amber Stiglianese, Brandi Laughter, Shelley Armijo, April Curtis, Ashlee Hearn, Brian Burriss, Broc Hays, and Samantha Herrmann; and his great-grandchildren: Megan Alilin, Sasha Alilin, Madisyn DiPrima, Kensingtyn Curtis, Payton Curtis, Logan Armijo, Miranda Armijo, Tino Armijo, Haylee Laughter, Dylan Laughter, Quinn Stiglianese, Charlee Hearn, Tyler Burriss, Brandon Burriss, Emily Hays, Braxton Hays, Broderick Hays, and Cash Herrmann.
A graveside service will be held at Hanford Cemetery on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., followed immediately thereafter by a reception at Glad Tidings Church, Fellowship Hall, in Hanford. A visitation will be held at People's Funeral Chapel on the preceding day, Tuesday, November 13, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Flowers may be sent to People's Funeral Chapel in Hanford. Or, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glad Tidings Church in Hanford.
