Michael Daniel Torres, age 63 of Hanford, CA passed away on May 15, 2014 in San Francisco, CA. He was born on July 10, 1950 in Bakersfield, CA to the late José C. Torres and Virginia Torres. He was raised in Hanford, graduated from Hanford High School in 1969, and was drafted to the Vietnam War the same year. After serving the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he moved to Visalia to start a family with Rosario Rosas of Reedley, CA.
Torres worked for Butler Manufacturing for 19 years and later returned to school and obtained a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from Fresno State University in Victimology and Criminology. He later worked for the Tulare County Probation Department as a Juvenile Probation Officer. He reached his goal of becoming a correctional counselor for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and worked at Avenal State Prison. He retired from the CDCR in 2011.
After retirement, Michael enjoyed camping, golfing, traveling, dancing, attending music events, and spending time with his family and friends. Michael was an active member of Vietnam Veterans of America, and the American G.I. Forum.
Michael Torres is survived by his mother Virginia Torres of Hanford, his life companion of 15 years, Catherine Morales- Lopez of Hanford, his three children Bernadette Tonya Moreno (Aron) of Visalia, CA, Daniela E. Torres-Harrington (Sean) of San Leandro, CA, and Michael "Chendo" Torres (Mayra) of Oakland CA, as well as 5 grandchildren Mickayla, Haley, and Benny Moreno, Michael A. Torres, and Isla Torres-Harrington.
Michael is also survived by three brothers, Henry Torres of Hanford, Ron Torres (Tina) of Hanford and Sammy Torres (Barbara) of Porterville, and two sisters Stella Padilla (Jess) of Hanford, and Alice "Licha" Valdez (Richard) of San Diego, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be held from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday May 27, Rosary will follow at 6:00 p.m. at Whitehurst McNamara Funeral Home, Hanford. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hanford, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Hanford.
