EVARTS — Donald R. McCallister, 80, Evarts, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport following a brief illness. Born May 25, 1934 in Harlan to the late Albert and Dezzie Middleton McCallister, he had lived here all of his life. Donald was a faithful and dedicated member of the Jones Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He worked in various coal mines throughout Harlan County before retiring from the Eastover Mining Company at Brookside. After retiring Donald enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, hunting, gardening and gun trading, but his greatest joy came from the time he spent with his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Poppy."
In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his sisters, Dollie McCallister and Violet McCallister Bryant.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Dean McCallister, Evarts; children, Felicia Wooten and fiancé Eddie Tamme, Harlan; Faith Clem and husband Butch, Evarts; and Lance McCallister and wife, Brandi, Evarts; sisters, Joene Tipton and husband, Algin, Fairborn, OH; and Barbara McCallister, Dayton, OH.
Donald also leaves behind three grandchildren, Derrick Wooten, Harlan; and Katherine and Ben Clem, Evarts; his church family and many friends he made through his years of gun trading.
Visitation will be held Friday from 5 until 9 PM in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home with the Reverend Gerald Jones and special friend James Middleton officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evarts Memorial Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
