LAFOLLETTE, Tenn. — Milton Smith, 87, of Lafollette, TN formerly of Harlan, KY passed away suddenly April 21, 2014 at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.
The Son of the late L.P. "Lem" and Laura Miniard Smith, Milton grew up at Slemp, KY. He attended school at Viper and Buckhorn before graduating from Stuart Robinson High School, lettering in basketball. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army in occupied Italy.
Baptized as a young man, he joined the Presbyterian Church in Blackey, KY. He had been a Mason since 1948 and belonged to the Nolen Lodge #806. He became a Kentucky Colonel in 1988.
He began working for Blue Diamond Coal Co. in 1948 at Leatherwood where he was a tipple foreman before moving to Harlan in 1965 to begin a long-term association with Clyde Bennett's coal companies from which he retired.
He married Alma Spencer in 1949 and fathered three children.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Malcolm and Talton Smith and 3 sisters, Chloe Bunch, Gola Mooney, and Marie Phillips Ritter.
He is survived by the following members of his family:

2 precious great granddaughters: Melia and Alex who were the light of his life
He also leaves behind many other family members and friends.
He will be remembered as a kind, decent, hard-working, devoted and loving family man. Who loved feeding birds and squirrels and working in his yard. He was an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan and enjoyed attending reunions.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 25 at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Gillum presiding.
Interment will follow at the Powell Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Sergent, Christopher Smith, Andrew Smith, Jerry Adams, Glenn Creech, Verlin Caudill.
