HARLAN — Betty Lou Kirby Shell passed away quietly at her home Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Betty was born on July 23, 1949 to parents Cleopus and June Creech Kirby. Betty was a special person to all who knew her. She was always happy and jovial with something funny to say and could take humor to a whole new level.
Betty was employed by the Harlan County Board of Education in her younger years, the worked side by side with the love of her life, Bud, in their business, B&B Repair Service. She was currently employed by Harlan Appalachian Regional Healthcare where she worked until her recent illness. Betty was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Loyall.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, General "Bud" Shell.
Survivors include her son Steven Kirby Shell, of Loyall; her daughter, Freida Elaine Shell Shoemaker of Waterford, MI; her beloved grandsons, Gavin and Noah Shoemaker, of Waterford; a sister, Freida Kirby DiStaulo and husband Michael, of Medina, OH; sisters-in-law Ailene Braden and husband Richard, Dearborn Heights, MI; Carolyn Taylor and husband Buster of Loyall; and Sharon Marlin and husband Wesley of Wallins.
She is also survived by a special friend, Susan Welch of Loyall; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thank you to niece and caregiver Christy Hawks and caregivers Linda Stephens, Lori Reynolds and Kayla Johnson; and a special thank you to her faithful friends and co-workers in the business office at Harlan ARH.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 pm Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Loyall Funeral Home with funeral services beginning at 7 pm. Glenn Durham will officiate.
Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery at 10 am Friday, July 11. Pallbearers are Adam Honeycutt, Petie Vanhoosier, Tim Shackleford, Buster Taylor, Wesley Marlin, Dylan Fee, Johnny Hensley and Steve Lester. Honorary Pallbearers are Shelby Calton, Bobby Owens, Fred Kelly and Don White.
