SPEEDWELL, Tenn. — Elizabeth Irene Hicks Surgener, age 74, of Speedwell, TN passed away Nov. 4, 2013 at her home. She was born at Verda in Harlan Co., KY and lived a short time at Lenarue and Tway, KY before her family moved to Liggett, KY where she lived until the age of 23, when she met and married her loving husband of 47 years, Henry Clay Surgener. They made their first home in Lexington, KY for 10 years before returning to Speedwell, TN in 1980. She worked many jobs through the years including Eastover Mining at Highsplint, KY as a scoop driver. Of all the things she did, raising her children was her greatest pleasure. She also enjoyed many years of Evangelistic work, teaching the word of God at the parks, streets, and mountains, wherever she could. That was her life. She had been a licensed Evangelist for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Surgener, 2 sisters, Mary Ann Scott and Charity (Denise) Debusk; one brother, Lewis Eugene Hicks, and two infant brothers, Daniel Ray Hicks and one still born; brother-in-law, J. R. Jones; and her parents, Erman and Gladys Hicks.

She is survived by 4 children: Michael Surgener and wife, Saundra, Ricky Joe and wife, Lisa, Paula Hunter and husband, Bobby, Denise Kilgore and husband, Clay; 3 brothers: Thomas "Tom" Hicks and wife, Clarence Hicks and wife, Rita, Billy Wayne Hicks and wife, Lanora; 4 sisters: Lucille Emmons and husband, Michael, Pauline Lyons and husband, Donald, Virginia Jones, widow of J.R. Jones, Frandora Bargo and husband, Tony; 3 granddaughters: Elizabeth Griffin, Laura Stavin,Joetta Gibson and husband, Steve, and Tiffany Harp. 5 grandsons: Joseph Griffin, Henry Muncy and wife, Tina, Brian Cupp and wife, Shayla, Seth Surgener, and Shaun Hunter; 7 great grandchildren: Charles Muncy, Andrew Holt, McKennly Harp, Brandon Patterson, Sierra Patterson, Steven "Bumper" Gibson, Skyler Gilliam and Chrissa Gibson; Step-daughter, Barbara, and several step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, November 8, 2013 from 11AM to 2PM at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 2PM in the chapel of Mount Pleasant. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery, Cawood, KY with friends and family serving as pallbearers.
