GREENWOOD, Miss. — Hazel Belcher, 80, died January 22, 2014 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood, MS following a lengthy illness.

Hazel was born on March 18, 1933 in Harlan County, KY to George and Netha Dowell. Following graduation from Wallins Creek High School, Hazel married Elmer Belcher, a Navy sailor.

Mrs. Belcher travelled the world and loved her duties as a Navy wife. After Elmer's completion of the Naval Submariner's School at New London, CT, he and Hazel became proud members of the submarine service. Hazel remained proud of their years of service and retained her connection to the Navy following Elmer's death.

Mrs. Belcher was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, cooking, crafting, travel and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Wallins Creek Christian Church.

Mrs. Belcher was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer Belcher and a brother, James Walker Dowell of Alexandria, VA.

Mrs. Belcher is survived by her brother, Robert Dowell of Louisville, KY; a son Charles Daniel Belcher of Greenwood; a son, David Belcher of Baton Rouge, LA; a son, Bill Belcher of Long Beach, MS; a daughter, Ruth Belcher of Greenwood; a son, Samuel Belcher of Lexington, KY; 13 grand children and 11 great-grand children.

Services will be on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 1PM at Resthaven Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Obie Clark of The Wallins Christian Church officiating.
