HARLAN — Oscar Lee Mitchell, of Harlan, went home to be with his loved ones on Wednesday, November 05, 2013 at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was born unto the union of his parents, Charles and Abbie Gail Middleton Mitchell on Saturday, November 1, 1930. He was a coalminer and believed in the Holiness Faith. He was 83 years old.

Aside from his parents and his wife, Shirley Fay Mitchell, he has left this earthly life to follow his beloved brothers and sisters into Heaven. He leaves to mourn his passing family that loved him dearly. Oscar Mitchell was more than a brother, uncle, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was a hard-worker and friend to many. Oscar was a veteran of the Korean War.

Oscar leaves to mourn his passing two daughters; Melissa Mitchell and son-in-law Jerry Elliott, and Melinda Caruso of Coxton, KY; two granddaughters that he raised as his own: Shantal Boggs and husband, Ryan Boggs and Brittney Caruso. Two other granddaughters that held his heart in their hands: Brianna Elliott and his mother's namesake, Abbiegail Elliott. Also surviving are two grandsons, Jerry Elliott III and Tommy Hughett. He also cherished two great-grandchildren Hayden Cornett and Hayley Ann Boggs as well as one on the way. He also leaves behind two special sisters Anna Sue Boggs and husband Ernest Boggs and family; Edith Engle and family; a brother, John Mitchell and family. He also had two special nephews that were very close to his heart: Sonny Mitchell and family; and Walter Mitchell and family. He also leaves behind a very special person dear in his life, Dezzie Turner, whom helped his life in more ways than one. Lee Gist, his best friend, also mourns his passing.

Funeral services for Mitchell will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 in the chapel of Henson & Rich Funeral Home at 7 o'clock p.m. with the Reverend Darrell Turner and Reverend Ernest Boggs officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 5:00 o'clock p.m. until the funeral hour.

Graveside services will be Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11:00 o'clock a.m. in the Tway Cemetery at Tway, KY. Military honors will be performed by the Harlan Honor Guard, who will also serve as casket bearers for their deceased brother. Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends.
