Richard A. Shimkus

HARTFORD CITY – Richard A. Shimkus, 66, of Hartford City, passed away on Easter evening, Sunday, March 31, 2013, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

Richard was born on May 21, 1946, in LaPorte to the late Margaret Shimkus and was raised by his grandma.

After high school he went into the United States Navy where he served his country during Vietnam and learned his cooking skills.

He worked as a chef at RCA, Marion, where he met Hazel Doublin Peer and for 20 years they were best friends, companions and life partners. They saved each others lives many times.

He had many friends and Hazel's kids, grandkids and family friends who loved him and will miss dearly. Hazel was by his side earlier on Easter to hear him tell her he loved her.

Rick was a good computer gamer. He loved Hazel's dogs and entertaining his friends and family.

He loved to cook and feed you his wonderful menus. He will be missed by many.

Rick is survived by a step-brother, John Stuttle; a step-sister, Loretta Shook, a step-brother, Edward Shook; his only child, daughter, Melissa (husband, Naveed) Fazli; three grandsons, Arman, Rizvan and Shayan, all of Yorba Linda, Calif. 

A funeral service to celebrate Richard's life was on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Road 3, Muncie. Cremation wfollowed services.

Friends and family gathered to share and remember on Thursday afternoon at Garden View Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be given to aid in funeral expenses in care of Hazel Peer by contacting the funeral home.
