Robert Dean "Bobby Dean" Atkinson

HARTFORD CITY – Robert Dean "Bobby Dean" Atkinson, 68, of Hartford City, passed away at 12:25 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born in Indianapolis on February 27, 1945, to Zadok Robert Atkinson and Geraldine C. (McDonald) Atkinson.
Bobby Dean served in the United States Navy from March 10, 1964, to March 4, 1968, where he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

He married Daphne Phoebe (Masterson) Atkinson on October 8, 1966, in Milton, Mass.
Bobby Dean graduated from Indiana Police Academy, Plainfield. He worked for the Hartford City Police Department from October 17, 1976, until his retirement on May 1, 1992. He was formerly the police chief under Mayor Kitty Bonham in 1991. He also served as a reserve for three years at the Blackford County Sheriff's Department.

He was a member of American Legion Moyer Pooler Post #159, 40/8 Club, DAV Lifetime Member - Dr. Worthington Chapter #3 and Muncie Rifle and Pistol Club.

He and Daphne were avid campers and camped at Paradise Pointe, Portland, for the past ten years.
Bobby Dean will be sadly missed by his wife, Daphne Phoebe Atkinson, of Hartford City; daughters, K. Michelle (husband, Shawn) Gearheart, of Montpelier, and Heather N. (husband, David) Overmyer, of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren, Kaleb Dean Atkinson, James Robert Atkinson, Madison Gearheart, Mackenzie Gearheart, Branagan Gearheart and Ken Overmyer. sister, Jacqueline A. "Jackie" Lamott, of Hartford City; several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Robert "Cory" Atkinson.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City. Burial will follow at Hartford City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Keplinger Funeral Home.
