HARTFORD CITY – Betty J. Hoss, 68, of Hartford City, passed away after a short and courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Indiana University Health Blackford Hospital, Hartford City.
Betty was born on June 12, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of W. D. Howard Sr. and Martha (Bragg) How-ard.
She grew up in Upland graduating from Jefferson Township High School in 1963.
Betty married William Hoss Sr. on April 15, 1977, in Grant County.
She worked for Community & Family Services, was site manager for Area 6 Meals on Wheels and was social services director at Miller's Merry Manor, Hartford City.
Betty also had been a Girl Scouts leader when her girls were young.
She is survived by three children, Richael (Charles) Warner Atkinson, of Hartford City, Rhonda (Carey) Crawford, of Hartford City, and Rita (Randy) Cook, of Keystone; two step-daughters, Shelly Lester, of Marion, and Lisa Evans, of Gas City; one step-son, Williams Hoss Jr., of Alexandria; two brothers, Doug (Ruth) Howard, of Upland, and Tom Howard, of Upland; one sister-in-law, Pennie (Ed) Abels, of Coldwater, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her furry canine companions, Cuddles and Chloe.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 2001.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb., 12, 2014, in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with the Rev. Bobby Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Montpelier.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.
