AUBURN – Dennis P. "Butch" Whittington, 69, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2013, at his home in Auburn.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1943, in Auburn to Paul and Carol (Gerig) Whittington.
As a young boy, he had a beloved horse named Pepper. He and Pepper won several area horse show competitions and also took 1st place at the Indiana State Fair.
Mr. Whittington worked as a technician for AT & T for 45 years, retiring in 2005.
He was a member of the County Line Church of God, rural Auburn.
Butch was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge #1978, Auburn, where he was awarded Elk of the Year. He was a former member of the board of directors for R.I.S.E. Inc., Angola, and Greenhurst Country Club, Auburn.
He was an avid golfer and reader and also enjoyed many fishing trips to a family cabin with his friends.
After retirement, Butch enjoyed going to the Bridgewater Golf Club daily to play cribbage with his friends, and would then make the journey to the Elks Lodge, Auburn, to enjoy happy hour and good fellowship.
Surviving are his wife, Sheryl Whittington, of Auburn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy E. and Rex Pepple, of Waterloo, and Kristen D. and Gary Rhoton, of Montpelier; four grandchildren, Craig (wife, Canden) Pepple, Eric (wife, Torree) Pepple, Megan Rhoton, and Rachel Rhoton; one great grandchild, Addison Pepple; a brother and sister-in-law, Darryl and Susan Whittington, of Waterloo; a sister and brother-in-law, Deena and Roger Johnson, of Garrett.
An Elks memorial service and celebration of Butch's life will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Elks Lodge #1978, 311 E. Ninth St., Auburn, and all family and friends are welcome.
