Obituary

COLUMBUS – Robert W. "Smokey" Russell Jr., 72, of Columbus, passed away at 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Hospice of South Central Inpatient Facility, Columbus.

He was born in Hartford City on August 26, 1940, to Robert William Russell Sr. and Leona Patricia (Moll) Russell.

Robert married Phyllis A. Glover Neville Russell on May 21, 2004. She survives.

He retired from the United States Air Force in 1984 after 21 years of service. As a military police officer, he served at several bases, including Denang, Okinawa and Vietnam. While in the Air Force, he also worked on different types of airplanes as well as training police dogs to check for drugs.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Phyllis A. Glover Neville Russell, of Columbus, include a son, Larry Ken Neville, of Trafalgar; three daughters, Karen Lynn Russell, of Marion, Dawn Marie (husband, Therron) Walker, of United Arab Emerites, and Michelle Lee (husband, Michalec, of Scheretz, Texas; grandchildren, Dawn Renee Walker, Amber Michalec, Patrick Michalec, Chrystal Michalec, Chad Woodridge, Sarah Neville and Nikki Neville; sisters, Peggie Sue Russell, of Peru, Marcia K. (husband, Dennis) Russell Prior, of Columbus, Melody Ann Henry, of Wabash, Michelle (husband, Allen) Wallen, of Kokomo, and Melicia Batts, of Florida; nieces and nephews, Brad Cleveland, Patricia Williams, Dennis Prior, Keith Prior and William Prior; great-niece, Kendall Prior; great-nephew, Keith Prior Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert William Russell Sr. and Leona Patricia (Moll) Russell, grandparents, Albert Austin and Tula Mae Russell and George and Lenna Moll, and brother-in-law, David Cleveland.

Funeral service will be at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th St., Columbus, with the Rev. Wes Jones officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard followed by a memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Immediately following the service will be a Masonic Service.

In following with Smokey's wishes, cremation is planned.

Calling hours are from 2:30 p.m. until the time of service at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the funeral home.
