HARTFORD CITY – Mary Jane Mecklenburg, 86, of Hartford City, passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at Heritage Pointe, Warren.

She was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on October 2, 1926, to Joseph Rowntree and Helen L. (Dyer) Rowntree.
Mary married Alfred C. "Max" Mecklenburg in June 1947 in Columbus, Ohio, in the Methodist Church.
She graduated from Grand View High School, Columbus, Ohio, in 1944, and graduated from (Columbus) Ohio State University in 1948 with her bachelor's degree in teaching. She received her master's degree in 1970 from Ball State University, Muncie. She was a Blackford County elementary school teacher before her retirement, where she taught kindergarten, special education and reading.
Mary was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hartford City, Blackford County Teacher's Association and I.S.T.A. She was an honorary member of Psi Otes Sorority and the Research Club.
Mary will be sadly missed by daughter, Helen L. (husband, Bill) Musselman, of Hartford City; son, Alfred C. "Al" (friend, Diane Parson) Mecklenburg III, of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Kimberly Osborne, Elizabeth Adams, Kate Wright, Keli Penrod and Alison Thompson; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, grandson, Will Mecklenburg, sisters, Ruth Furney, Virginia Beakman and Helen Benfield, and brother, Bill Arthur.
Funeral service were conducted on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church, 117 W. Franklin St., Hartford City. Burial followed at Hartford City Cemetery.
Visitation was on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 North High St. Hartford City and on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at the church.
