Ralph Eugene Needler, 82, of Hartford City, passed away at 4:05 a.m. on Saturday, Jan.14, 2017, at I.U. Health Blackford Hospital in Hartford City.
He was born on Friday, Oct.19, 1934, in Harrison Township, Blackford County. He married Patricia J. Carnes on Sunday, Aug. 21, 1955, in the First United Methodist Church in Montpelier. Ralph was a 1953 graduate of Montpelier High School, where he played basketball for the Montpelier Pacers.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1963. While in the military he attended the Army Engineering School where he completed additional training for his specialty, Engineer Equipment Maintenance Technician.
Ralph received the good conduct medal in sharpshooting and served 1 ½ years in Germany.
He retired from Dana Corporation in Marion after many years of service and was a longtime farmer. Prior to Dana, he worked at St. Joe Paper in Hartford City. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or keeping up with his yard work. Ralph was an avid NASCAR and Purdue basketball fan. Once retired, Ralph and his wife Patty enjoyed wintering in South Padre Island. They both were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Montpelier.

(Carnes) Needler, Hartford City; Sons - Phil (Susan) Needler, Williamston, Mich., and Bill (Laura) Needler, La Fontaine, Ind; Grandchildren - Jay (Katie) Needler, Mt. Zion, Ill., Leslie (Josh) Weaver, Haslett, Mich., Colin (Kelly) Needler, Indianapolis, Devon (Fiance, Christina Gonzalez) Needler, Noblesville, Ind., Ross Needler, Williamston, Mich.; Great Granddaughters - Jillian Needler, Natalie Weaver, Leah Weaver, and Brother - Raymond (Jeanette) Needler, Montpelier.
He was preceded in death by his: Father - Henry William Needler; Mother - Alice May (Beymer) Needler; Sister - Imogene Pearl Taylor, and Brother - Herschel William Needler.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier, on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m.
A service to celebrate Ralph's life will be at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017; viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Tim Wallace will officiate. Burial will follow in Brookside Memorial Park in Montpelier. The U.S. Army and Millard Brown American Legion Post 156 will conduct graveside honors.
