WARREN – Elvin Mann Schrope, 98, of Warren, passed away at 2:35 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Heritage Pointe, Warren.

Elvin was born at Saint John's Hospital, Anderson, on September 2, 1914, to William Daniel Schrope (1881-1973) and Emma Susan Mann Schrope (1882-1952).

He graduated from Anderson High School in 1932 and General Motors Tech, Flint, Mich., in 1936.

Elvin married Juanita Eillene Seybert on August 18, 1937.

He worked as a toolmaker at Delco Remy, Anderson, until 1946 and then moved to Muncie and worked for the architectural firm of Hamilton & Graham. In 1951, he returned to Anderson to work in the plant engineering department of Delco Remy. He worked there until his retirement in 1974.

After he retired, he and Juanita traveled extensively in their travel trailer and then motor home. He built his "dream home" on West 8th Street Rd., outside of Anderson. During their travels, they fell in love with Sun City, Ariz., and moved there in 1980. They stayed there until 1993 when they moved to the United Methodist Memorial Home (now Heritage Pointe) Warren.

Elvin was always athletic. He loved anything physical. From the late 1950's until the mid 1970's, he was the "guy to beat" at the Anderson YMCA in handball. He started riding a bicycle about the same time.

While he was in Sun City, he and his "bikin' buddy" Hugh McBride would often ride a hundred miles in a day. They rode almost every day the weather was fit. He estimated that he put over 50,000 miles on his bike.

While in Warren he continued to ride and rode to Markle or Bluffton for breakfast about three days a week. Finally, at age 88, his eyesight became so poor with Macular Degeneration that he decided he could no longer ride safely.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Juanita, in 2006, an older brother, Paul Schrope (1910-1998) and older sister, Alice (1912-2006).

He is survived by his children, Carol Schrope (husband, Sherman) Scott, of Warren/Anderson, and Fred E. (wife, Kay) Schrope, of rural Hartford City. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Suzanne (husband, Larry) Jones, of Winder, Ga., Scott Aldred, of Winder. Ga., Amy Aldred, Winder, Ga., Sherol Scott (husband, Dan) Irons, of Athens, Ga., Michael (wife, Julie) Schrope, of rural Greenfield, Kathy (husband, Mike) Dunsmore, of Morrow, Ohio, and Alan (wife, Lisa) Schrope, of Sahuarita, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren; a younger sister, Elsie (husband, George) Hughes, formerly of Marion and now Indianapolis; a younger brother, Daniel (wife, Sue) Schrope, of Anderson.

Funeral services will be conducted in Applegate Chapel at Heritage Pointe, 801 N. Huntington Ave., Warren, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21.
