WILHELM, Walter C.
Walter C. Wilhelm, 89, of Manchester, beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. (Smith) Wilhelm passed away peacefully on Sunday (March 24, 2013). Walt was born on Aug. 26, 1923 in Manchester, son of the late Paul and Elsie (Blau) Wilhelm. He attended local schools and had been a lifelong resident of Manchester. Walt was a WWII veteran, proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. He participated in action at Guadalcanal, Rendova Island and Guam. Prior to his retirement, he was self employed working in the cleaning and maintenance of several businesses in the area. He was a member of the VFW and a former member of the Zipser Club in Manchester. He was a dedicated New York Yankees fan and never missed a game. In his later years he began to watch PGA golf and was an avid follower of Tiger Woods. Walt is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Carole and Stephen Shanley of Manchester with whom he made his home and Cheryl and Richard Dickson of Noank, his four grandchildren; Matthew Shanley and his girlfriend, Melony Brady, Jennifer Griffith and her husband, Greg, Erin Pendleton and her husband, Brian and Paul Dickson and his fiancé, Kerry Scanlon, three great-grandchildren; Carter Griffith and Cole and Paige Pendleton and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents Walt was predeceased by his son Brian E. Wilhelm his brother, Alfred Wilhelm and his three sisters, Elsie Bohadik, Edna McDougal and Ida Cummings.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 27 from 4-7 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 28 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in East Cemetery, Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse & Health Services, Inc.
