Abraham "Abe" Lipiner, 94, of West Hartford, Old Lyme, and formerly of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away at home on Friday, (July 26, 2013), surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband for 64 years to the late Sarah "Sylvia" Lipiner. Born in Germany in 1919, Abe survived the Holocaust but lost his parents and all but one sibling, the late Harry Federbush of Montreal, Canada, who he found after the end of WWII. Abe, along with Sylvia and their daughter, Irene, immigrated to the United States in 1947. In 1956, Abe co-founded Esquire Cleaners in Greater Hartford. While living in West Hartford, Abe and Sylvia were members of the Emanuel Synagogue. For over 20 years, Abe and Sylvia, with their family spent summers at Old Colony Beach in Old Lyme. Abe leaves behind two children: Irene (Kane) Smith and her husband Craig, of Newington, and Joseph Lipiner and his wife Susan of West Hartford; five grandchildren: Felicia and Robin Kane, Jason, Jamie and Robert Lipiner and a great-grandchild Sam Cook.
The graveside funeral service will be Monday, July 29, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Cantor Sanford Cohn officiating at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Road, East Granby (next to Simsbury Airport). Following interment, the family will receive friends at the home of Joseph and Susan Lipiner, 149 Simsbury Rd., West Hartford with a Shiva minyan at 6 p.m. and receive again on Tuesday & Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. with services for both nights again at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to the Old Colony Beach Congregation Beth El, C/O Anita Kaplowitz, 26 Wiltshire La.
