Alden E. Carlson, 83, of Cromwell, beloved husband of Arlene (Hauschulz) Carlson, passed away peacefully on Friday, (March 8, 2013) after a courageous two year battle with ALS. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Ernest and Ethel (Nygren) Carlson. He was a resident of Ramsey, NJ before moving to Cromwell 18 years ago. Alden graduated from Newington High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 43rd Infantry division as a Master Sergeant. He graduated from the University of Connecticut, where he served as president of the Student Union. Alden was formerly employed in insurance sales and was the owner of his own brokerage agency before retiring. He was a charter member of the Windsor Jaycees and a former member of the Rotary Club. Alden served in various church capacities throughout his life and was a member of Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching soccer and Little League baseball and served as a Little League umpire. Alden and Arlene enjoyed traveling with their pop-up camper for many years as well as camping at the Pines. Surviving are his loving wife, Arlene; his children, Matthew W. Carlson and his wife Robin of Richmond, VA, and Susan C. Gay and her husband Bud of Vernon, NJ; a brother, William E. Carlson and his wife Janet of Farmington; three granddaughters, Laura (Gay) Ludwig, Sarah Gay and Alyssa Carlson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger W. Carlson.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. at Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill St., Berlin.
