ALLEYNE, Barbara M.
Barbara M. Alleyne went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, (July 20, 2011) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford. Barbara was born in Hartford to the late William and Rupert (Williams) Murray on January 24, 1930 and was their only child. Barbara was educated in the Hartford School System, and was a graduate of Fisk University, Nashville, TN. She returned to her community and taught for 30 plus years in the Hartford School System. Her passion was community service. She was very active in many community service organizations, including LINKS, John E. Rogers Foundation where she served as president. She founded and secured funding from the community as well as through grants for the Sorority's SAT Program held at Weaver High School for 30 plus years, and directed it until she became ill. This highly successful program has helped hundreds of Hartford area high school students prepare for entrance into college. She was past president of CT Valley Girl Scouts, she was one of the founders of the Juneteenth Committee which is celebrated annually in Hartford. Barbara was a longtime, faithful and committed member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. "Oh, how she loved Delta"! She was made in 1951, in Alpha Beta Chapter at Fisk University. She was President of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter from 1961-1963, served as the Chapter Custodian, as well as on numerous other committees. Barbara was an active, dedicated, and faithful member of Union Baptist Church. She served as Chairperson of the Church's Archival/Historical Committee, as Co-Chair of Women's Day in 2010, and Chair in 2011. Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, Joseph Alleyne; her loving daughter, Susan Alleyne both of Hartford; her sorority sisters, as well as a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 11 a.m., at Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main St., Hartford. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Mrs. Alleyne,
I just heard of your passing and it makes me sad.
I wanted to say thank you for what you did for so many young people. You were my second grade teacher and you selected me for a solo for a school production. It changed my whole world - my whole life. Thank you for recognizing not just my talent, but the talent of many others and awakening something within them.
I remember your teachings about the Fisk Jubilee Singers. This too changed my life.
Later on I had the privilege of working with you on the Juneteenth Committee. Connecting with you as an adult was even a greater honor because of what you showed me. You were the example of professionalism, courtesy and quiet power. In my eyes you are phenomenal. Thank you for the lessons of how to be.
Your life and your light is one that I will remember forever.
Thank you.

To the family and loved ones,
Barbara was a woman of passion. She expressed that passion through dilligent and faithful work on behalf of the things that she believed in most. She was one of Hartford's greatest unsung 'sheroes'. She left our community a better place because of her leadership and effort. I am blessed to have known her sisterly love. May God comfort and uphold you during this difficult time.

In 2003 Mrs. Alleyne asked me if I would join the Board of Directors of the John E. Rogers African American Cultural Center. I said yes. I was honored when the Board of Directors voted yes to accept me as a member. Through Mrs. Alleyne and the Board, I have grown light-years in knowledge of Hartford's history and especially the African American experience. As Mrs. Alleyne and I rode around the city, she pointed out the historical events and personalities that seemed to accent each corner and every street. Thank you to Susan and Mr. Alleyne for sharing your beloved with us all. When your hearts gets full, remember the 23rd Psalm. His rod and his staff will comfort you. Deepest sympathies from me and my family!

I did my student teaching with Mrs. Alleyne, and later worked as a team teacher with her at F. O. Jones / M. L. King School. She was a powerful role model, and served as a mentor to so many. She worked tirelessly throughout her long career to ensure that all children become the best that they can be. In retirement, it seems that she continued her mission to educate, and open minds. I am grateful to have been taught by the BEST. Rest in Peace Barbara Alleyne. The world will miss your fighting, can-do spirit.
