Dr. Benjamin D. Thaw died at home on Saturday, December 14, 2013, in the presence of his dedicated caregiver, Krisztina Jarai. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Muriel "Midge" Thaw, his son, S. Blair Thaw, and his brother, A. B. Thaw. He was the son of The Reverend Stephen Dows Thaw and Elise S. Thaw. Dr. Thaw was raised in his early years in Switzerland where he graduated in Zurich at the lyceum. He returned to the U.S. during World War II
and attended Harvard University
and transferred into the Navy V-12 program at the University of Chicago. He completed his premedical curriculum at Dartmouth College and entered active service in the Navy but was chosen to enter medical school and obtained his M.D. degree from George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He pursued his surgical training which was interrupted by a stint in the military service during the Korean conflict
when he served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps as a surgeon in a general hospital in Germany. He practiced his specialty in Hartford for 33 years. He was a member of the various local and national medical societies and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Diplomats of the American Board of Surgery.
