BOURRET, Clarence "Chuck"

Clarence "Chuck" Bourret, 90, of West Hartford, devoted husband of the late Irene (Dower) Bourret, died early Friday morning (March 22, 2013) at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was born March 5, 1923 in Fitchburg, MA, the son of the late George and Julie (DesChenes) Bourret and resided in West Hartford for the past 57 years. He was valedictorian of his 1941 graduation class at Hartford Public High School and entered the University of Notre Dame in Sept. Between 1943 and 1946 he served the US Army, including a year in the European Theatre as a field engineer. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Notre Dame in the fall of 1946 and graduating Magna Cum Laude with his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in 1948. He was also a member of the Notre Dame Glee Club. Bourret earned a Masters of Engineering degree from Harvard in 1950 and began a career in the engineering field shortly thereafter. He married Irene Dower, a registered nurse whom he had met while working as a summer orderly at St. Francis Hospital, on Jan. 21, 1950 and they were devoted husband and wife for 61 years. Bourret spent most of his professional career as a project engineer for United Technologies in Middletown and South Windsor. In the 1960s he was a member of an engineering team that designed the fuel cells for the Apollo space missions, including Apollo 11, the mission that first put man on the moon in 1969. He retired from United Technologies in 1981. He was active in the local Notre Dame Club as the Chairman of the Schools Committee for many years. He was named Man of the Year for the Notre Dame Club of the Connecticut Valley in 1977. He was a devout communicant of St. Mark the Evangelist Church in West Hartford. He is survived by his son Timothy F. Bourret of Seneca, SC, the Sports Information Director at Clemson University and a 1977 Notre Dame graduate, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Irene; and his five sisters and two brothers.
His funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 9 a.m. from the Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave, Newington (at Newington Memorial) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Church West Hartford. Interment will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday (March 25) from 6-8 p.m. at Fisette-Batzner.
