MAFFEO, Connie Annette
Connie Annette Maffeo, age 66, of Niantic, formerly of Simsbury, died Friday afternoon at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford surrounded by her family. She fought a courageous battle with Pancreatic cancer for 20 months. She was born in Yonkers, NY on May 1, 1947. She is predeceased by her parents Vito and Norma (Viesti) Dell'Accio. Connie graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels High School, Ft. Lee, N.J. in 1965. From there she went to Duquesne University, where she graduated in 1969 Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. E.d. After that she attended graduate school at Bowling Green State University (OH) where she received an M.E.d in 1973. Connie was an elementary school teacher for 3 years before becoming a full time mother. Connie reentered the work force and eventually became the Director of the Business Response Center at the Connecticut Economic Resource Center, where she worked 20 years until the time of her death. She affectionately referred to them as her "second family." While she was there, she received the Member of the Year Award from CEDAS (Connecticut Economic Development Association). Connie strongly believed in helping others, raising funds for the American Cancer Society and the ABC House in Simsbury. She had been a member of the Simsbury PTO, and had been a reporter for the Simsbury High School Crew Team. Connie's life revolved around her family; spending countless hours at crew races and baseball parks, always being the most enthusiastic cheerleader. She loved her grandchildren, known to them as Meme. Connie loved watching Joey play the guitar, Jenny ice skating, Elizabeth entertaining everyone and Charlie's infectious smile. She is survived by the love of her life, husband of 43 years -Gilbert Maffeo Jr. She is also survived by a daughter Sharon Russas and husband Joe of Falmouth, MA; a son Gilbert Maffeo III and wife Lisa of Oakdale, CT; two brothers- William Dell'Accio and wife Elizabeth of Little Elm, TX; and Dennis Dell'Accio and wife Janet of West Hartford, CT; four grandchildren, six nephews, sister-in-law Judy Stall of Wilmington, OH, mother in law Mary Maffeo of Pittsburgh, PA who looked at her as a second daughter and countless friends and family. Connie touched the lives of so many people. She will be missed most for her compassion and zest for life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Wednesday at St. Agnes Church, Haig Ave., Niantic, with interment to follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Calling hours are from 5-8 PM on Tuesday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Oncology Department at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford.
