David T. SANDSTROM

SANDSTROM, David T.

David Theodore Sandstrom, 90, of Cromwell, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2013 at home. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet Eielson Sandstrom. Born in Holden, MA, he was the son of the late David T. and Clara (Bloomquist) Sandstrom. David began his college career at Worcester Polytechnic Institute leaving in 1943 to serve in World War II. He completed Officer Candidate School and served as an Army Lieutenant for the remainder of the war. After returning from the war David completed his BA degree in Business Administration from Boston University. On June 4, 1954 he married his lifetime love, Janet. They began their married life in California where they had their daughter, Cindy. They lived in Massachusetts in 1959 moving to Connecticut in 1963 where they made their home. They loved entertaining and made time to have friends over as often as possible. They especially enjoyed hosting friends who were traveling through the area and their house was affectionately called The Sandstrom Inn by many. They became residents of Covenant Village of Cromwell in 2001, where they enjoyed spending time with many life-long friends. Dave, as he was known to friends, retired from a career as Assistant Vice President for the Hartford Financial Services. The most important things to him were his family and his faith. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his two grandsons of whom he was so proud. Being a man of great faith he devoted time to Bethany Covenant Church serving in most leadership roles. He felt his biggest contribution was to serve as chair of the land acquisition committee. He and many other individuals spent over five years searching for just the right piece of land for the current location of Bethany. Dave is survived by his daughter, Cindy Meeker and her husband Edward Elijah Meeker, Jr. who was like a son to Dave. Also surviving are his grandsons, Air Force Captain Edward Elijah Meeker, III and Andrew David Meeker. All were so fortunate to spend as much time together as possible in the last few months of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Robert E. Sandstrom and his wife Judith of Florida; a sister, Isabelle E. Richardson of Holden, MA, a sister-in-law Doris Eielson Raynor of Cheshire, a sister-in-law Evelyn Eielson of Florida, a brother-in-law Judge Rodney S. Eielson of Florida and several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to express its gratitude and great affection for the staff of Franciscan Home Care and Hospice without whom this situation would have been more difficult.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Covenant Church. Interment will take place in the church Memorial Garden. Memorial donations may be made to the Bethany Covenant Church Building Fund, 785 Mill St., Berlin, CT 06037 or Franciscan Home Care and Hospice, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.
