MATTOCKS, Ellen L.
Ellen L. Mattocks, 62, of Bristol, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2013 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington after a long illness. She was born on July 14, 1950 in South Bend, IN, the eldest daughter of the late Carl Mattocks and Betty (Bryant) Mattocks and also the first grandchild of Ellen Q. Bryant-her namesake. Her family moved to Farmington in 1952 and Ellen was confirmed at the First Church of Christ Congregational where she continued to be a life ling member. She graduated from Farmington High School in 1968 and went on to graduate from Hartford Academy of Hairdressing. She worked at several salons in Simsbury and Avon before joining Connecticut Community Care as a Medicaid Accounts Receivable specialist for approximately 10 years. Ellen later worked for a number of other companies as an office manager or billing coordinator including Community Visiting Nurse and Homecare, Health Direct and most recently Gibbs College. Ellen loved spending quality time with family and friends and was a kindhearted, caring, sensitive and generous person, but most of all Ellen just loved to have fun. As a young girl, Ellen enjoyed spending endless hours ice skating on Bryant's Pond with her sisters and friends. She enjoyed going to the casino to play the penny slot machines, going to Cape Cod and loved the one cruise that she was able to go on several years ago that she frequently spoke about afterwards and fondly treasured. Ellen developed a passion for photography and her hobby turned into numerous professional engagements over the years including weddings, graduations, confirmations, etc, in addition to being the family "picture taker". Ellen also became an avid Red Sox fan, following in her mother's footsteps and especially enjoyed her trips to Fenway Park, even last summer when she was wheelchair bound. Ellen was also very proudly a lifetime member of the Seventh Armored Division Association, former secretary for the VFW #10361 Ladies Auxiliary of Farmington and former Girl Scout. She is survived by her best friend and caretaker, Kevin Martin; two sisters, Marion Olson and her husband Gary of Bristol, Cheryl Higley and her husband Richard of Farmington and three nephews whom she treasured, Garrett Olson, Richie Higley and Zachary Higley; as well as two aunts and several cousins. The family would like to acknowledge the nurses and assistants at Countryside Manor in Bristol as well as the staff at John Dempsey Hospital for the dedicated excellent care that they provided.
