Frances J. Ahlquist

AHLQUIST, Frances J. Frances J. Ahlquist, 83, lifelong resident of Middletown, beloved wife of the late Daniel C. "Cliff" Ahlquist, passed away peacefully on Saturday, (August 15, 2009) at Middlesex Hospital with her children by her side. She was born in Middletown on February 6, 1926, the youngest of five children of the late Susan (Herdman) and James Jones. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Frances was a retired employee of the State of Connecticut, and over the course of her employment worked in the Office of the Comptroller, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Medical Records Department of Connecticut Valley Hospital. She was a past president of her local chapter of the CSEA/SEIU Local 2001. Frances was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. She will be remembered for always having a craft project in the works; sewing, crocheting, and painting were just a few of the hobbies she enjoyed, along with listening to traditional Irish music. Frances was happiest at the beach and loved her annual summer vacations at Hawk's Nest Beach. She also treasured the memories of the three trips she took to Ireland. But most of all she delighted in being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Frances was pre-deceased by her son, Daniel, and three of her siblings: James Jones, Mary Schaefer, and Susan Shafer. She is survived by her sister, Catharine Zachary of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by her children and their spouses: Patricia Ahlquist of Old Saybrook, Patrick and Joan Ahlquist of Cromwell, Francis and Jane Ahlquist of West Hartford, Robert and Susan Miller of Hebron, and her daughter-in-law Martha Ahlquist of Avon. She will be missed by her grandchildren and their spouses: Ericka and John Miller, Jennifer Freberg and Jake Ayer, Arie Freberg, Amy and Christopher Keithan, Ryan Ahlquist, Christopher Ahlquist, Pamela and Christopher Harley, Douglas Miller, and Daniel Ahlquist. Her cherished great-grandchildren are Trevor Gale, Matilda Miller, Tyler Keithan, and Zachary Keithan. Frances also leaves an extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many good friends. The Funeral Liturgy will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Elm St., Middletown. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown.
