SULLIVAN, Frederick Thomas

Frederick Thomas Sullivan, age 96, passed away on January 22, 2013 after a short illness. He was the youngest of 11 children born to John and Ellie (Gorman) Sullivan. He was predeceased by his loving brothers and sisters: Katherine (Kitty), Thomas, Ann, Helen, Timothy, Francis, John (Jack), Josephine, Theresa, and Mary. Mr. Sullivan was a graduate of Saint Mary School, class of 1930. He became an altar boy and served the first Mass at the dedication of the new Immaculate Conception Parish Church. He played basketball while at St. Mary School, and helped to coach the team in later years. He graduated from Wilby High School where he was an outstanding athlete in baseball, basketball, and football. Mr. Sullivan became a supernumery policeman for the City of Waterbury in 1940. In 1942 he joined the United States Coast Guard, where he served through 1946. After the war, he returned to the police department where he was appointed Sergeant in 1951 and Lieutenant in 1955. He was chosen to attend the FBI National Academy in Washington D.C. for specialized training. In 1959 he was appointed Deputy Superintendent, and nine years later was promoted to Superintendent of Police of the City of Waterbury. He held this position at the department until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement, he served on the State of Connecticut Labor Department Mediation/Arbitration Board. He also enjoyed spending quality time with his friends at the Brass City Mall and Loehmann-Blasius Chevrolet. Mr. Sullivan has been a member of the Knights of Columbus Sheriden Council #24, fourth degree and was a life member of the Waterbury Lodge of Elks. He was a member of the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the New England Chiefs of Police Association where he served as president. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Watertown Country Club for many years. Mr. Sullivan leaves behind a loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Winifred (Dooley) Sullivan, and is survived by his two children, Barry Sullivan and his wife Vicki of Clinton, along with grandson Ryan, and his daughter, Denise Ainsworth, and her husband, Robert of Coventry. The family would like to thank the staff at the Woodlake Healthcare Center in Tolland for their efforts in making his last days comfortable.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday Jan. 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St., Waterbury. Private burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow St., Waterbury is in charge of arrangements.
