George C. Whelan(1932 - 2014)

George Curtis (Curt) Whelan, 81, husband of Ellen Whelan, passed away March 18, 2014 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a brief illness. He was born in New London on November 1, 1932, son of the late George and Phyllis Whelan, and was a long-time resident of Clinton. In addition to Ellen, his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his sons, Curtis Whelan (Jacqueline) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Scott Whelan (Jessica) of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Curt was the beloved "Pop-Pop" of Christopher Whelan, Bryan Whelan, Katherine Whelan, and Benjamin Whelan. Curt attended East Haven High School and Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Ellen Danielson in 1958. He began his career working for the New Haven Railroad and later worked as the Area Construction Engineer for Amtrak. Curt devoted much of his time in retirement to the betterment of the town of Clinton, including service on the town's Board of Finance and Economic Development Commission. He was a former Trustee of the Henry Carter Hull Library in Clinton. Curt and Ellen traveled throughout their marriage and enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren. He was a kind and generous man who was devoted to his family and community. At Curt's request, services will be private.
