WELLS, George H. Jr.

George H. Wells, Jr., 88, of Vernon, beloved husband of the late Phylis Rounds Wells passed away March 19, 2013 with his loving family by his side. He was the son of George and Anna Wells. Born in Warren, Pa. October 12, 1924 he lived in Vernon for over 50 years. He was a graduate of Warren High School and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York where he received his Teaching Degree in Physical Education. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corp. during World War II and the Korean Conflict where he was a member of the VMB 413 Squadron. He met his wife, Phylis in Memphis, Tenn. where she was stationed while serving as a Navy Wave. He began his teaching career in Biddeford, Maine where he taught Physical Education and coached the high school football and basketball teams. He continued his long teaching career in the Manchester, CT school system where he taught at Bennett Jr. High School, and many of the local elementary schools including Nathan Hale and Robertson, before retiring in 1986. He coached the Bennett basketball team and the Manchester High School Golf Team. He was a member and past Commander of the Vernon VFW. Post #10121. He was also a member of the Rockville Lodge of Elks # 1359 and the Rockville Fish and Game Club. He was a volunteer at Rockville General Hospital for over 25 years. George was a parishioner of St. Bridget Church where he served as a Eucharist Minister. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. George was a kind and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. His calm and polite demeanor was admired by many. He was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind his son, Timothy Wells and his wife, Aletta (Lou) of Branford; his daughters, Kathleen Stavens and her husband, Michael of Vernon; Ann Villano and her husband, Peter of South Windsor and Colleen Williamson of Vernon. His grandchildren, Carolyn Eastman, Joanne Martin, John Stavens, Patricia Glancey, Jennifer Wells, Ryan Wells, Megan Wall, Kimberly Williamson and Jeanette Gumbulevich and their families, 11 great grandchildren and many dear nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. George also leaves sisters, Janet Dinardi of Warren, PA, and Elizabeth Russell of Buffalo, NY. He was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas, James, Joseph; and sisters, GeorgeAnn and Alice. George's family would like to thank his nurses and Rehab therapists on Bissell, IL, at Rockville General Hospital and Woodlake at Tolland, a special thank you to his care takers Brenda and Tina for their compassionate care of our father and to Dr. Michael Sharon and his staff for all of their care throughout the years.
His family will receive friends Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St. Rockville, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial, will be held Friday, March 22, 2013 at 10 a.m., at St. Bridget Church, Manchester, CT. Burial with military honors will be at the convenience of the family .
